Order of Joe Copp Books

American author Don Pendleton created the Joe Copp, Private Eye series, a collection of hardboiled detective novels featuring a towering 6'3″, 260-pound private investigator. The books follow a distinctive narrative structure where each story begins with Copp pursuing a criminal, then shifts to first-person flashbacks as Copp recounts the events that led him to his current predicament.

Pendleton launched the series in 1987 with Copp for Hire and concluded it after six novels with Copp in Shock in 1992. The books follow both publication and chronological order, making them easy for readers to follow sequentially.

In the series opener, Copp for Hire, a stripper's murder pulls Joe Copp deep into Southern California's dark criminal world before the case takes him to Honolulu's Chinatown. Throughout his investigation, Copp encounters a rogues' gallery of corrupt politicians, crooked law enforcement officers, and exploited call girls, establishing the gritty tone that defines the series.
