Order of Conan Books

Robert E. Howard's legendary creation, Conan the Barbarian (also known as Conan the Cimmerian), stands as one of the most iconic figures in sword and sorcery literature. This formidable warrior inhabits the Hyborian Age, a fantastical era set in the aftermath of Atlantis's fall. Hailing from Cimmeria, Conan had already established himself as an extraordinary fighter by his fifteenth year. Following his assault on an Aquilonian outpost, the mighty barbarian embarked on epic quests filled with supernatural creatures, powerful sorcerers, tavern wenches, and beautiful royalty. Throughout his legendary career, Conan has worn many hats: thief, outlaw, mercenary, and sea-faring pirate.

Howard introduced this beloved character to readers through Weird Tales magazine in 1932. The original creator completed twenty-one Conan tales before his death, but the character's legacy continued through the works of notable authors including Poul Anderson, Robert Jordan, L. Sprague de Camp, Lin Carter, Bjorn Nyberg, John Maddox Roberts, and Harry Turtledove. Our focus centers on three key publishers who brought Conan's adventures to book form: Gnome Press, Lancer/Ace, and Donald M. Grant. The following compilation presents these three Conan series arranged by their original publication dates (with chronological ordering applied where appropriate):

Notes: Conan the Conqueror was also published as The Hour of the Dragon. The Return of Conan was written by Bjorn Nyberg and L. Sprague de Camp, based on the writing of Robert E. Howard. Tales of Conan consists of non-Conan stories written by Howard that were re-written as Conan stories.
