Order of Charlie Chan Books
Earl Derr Biggers created the fictional detective Charlie Chan as the protagonist of his celebrated mystery series. Biggers drew loose inspiration from Chang Apana, an actual detective who served in Hawaii, and deliberately crafted Chan to challenge the prevalent Asian villain stereotypes found in contemporary entertainment and literature.
As a detective with the Honolulu police force, Chan investigates cases both in his home city and across various international locations throughout the series. The character's popularity extended far beyond books, spawning over four dozen film adaptations. Warner Oland became synonymous with the role, portraying Chan in sixteen films, followed by Sidney Toler who continued the character's cinematic legacy in twenty-two additional movies.
Charlie Chan first appeared in The House Without a Key, where readers meet him as an Inspector with the Honolulu Police Department. This inaugural novel earned praise for its distinctive depiction of Honolulu, featuring Chan speaking in the pidgin English characteristic of Hawaiian locals. The story introduces Chan through John Quincy Winterslip, a member of a prominent Boston family who discovers his uncle Dan's murder. As John Quincy collaborates with Chan to unravel the mystery, he undergoes a personal transformation, gradually embracing the Hawaiian way of life.
