Order of Boxcar Children Books

Created by American author Gertrude Chandler Warner, The Boxcar Children is a beloved series of children's mystery novels centering on four orphaned siblings: Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny Alden. The story begins when these children discover an abandoned boxcar deep in the woods and transform it into their makeshift home. Their lives take a turn when they encounter their grandfather, who proves to be kind and caring—quite different from the harsh person they had imagined him to be. From there, the Alden children embark on countless adventures as young detectives, tackling various mysteries they encounter along the way. While grown-ups appear throughout the stories, the children operate with remarkable independence in their investigations.

The series has its roots in 1924 when Warner first published her initial work, though the more familiar version didn't appear until 1942. Warner personally authored the first 19 books in the series, concluding her contributions with Benny Uncovers a Mystery in 1976. After a hiatus, the series was revitalized in 1991 with The Haunted Cabin Mystery, continuing under ghostwriters. An animated film adaptation featuring Martin Sheen was released in 2014.

The original work, titled The Box-Car Children in 1924, underwent revision and was republished in 1942 as the shorter The Boxcar Children.
