Order of C.P. Snow Books
C.P. Snow (1905-1980) was an English novelist who uniquely bridged the worlds of literature and science. A trained physicist, Snow also held various roles within the British Civil Service and government throughout his career. In 1957, he was elevated to the peerage by Queen Elizabeth II, becoming Baron Snow. Snow's most ambitious work was the Strangers and Brothers series, which centers on narrator Lewis Eliot and required more than three decades to complete. He was married to novelist Pamela Hansford Johnson, with whom he had a son.
Snow launched his writing career in 1932 with Death Under Sail. His complete works are listed below in chronological order of publication:
Note: The novel George Passant was initially published under the title Strangers and Brothers.
C.P. Snow Book Summaries: Death Under Sail stands alone in Snow's catalog. The story centers on Roger Mills, a Harley Street medical specialist enjoying a sailing vacation on the Norfolk Broads. When his six companions discover him at his yacht's helm—bearing a smile but with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest—each guest becomes a murder suspect.
The Search is another standalone work by Snow. Narrated in first person, the novel traces a journey from childhood fascination with the stars to scientific career. A simple telescope ignites the narrator's lifelong passion for science, leading him to King's College, London for his studies. Later, as a Cambridge fellow, he navigates romantic relationships while pursuing both love and professional achievement, ultimately finding that personal fulfillment diminishes his scientific ambitions.
