Born and raised in Kansas, Weir initially pursued a career in healthcare, training as a nurse at the University of Oklahoma before working as a public health nurse. However, her passion for storytelling eventually led her to the world of mystery fiction, where she found her true calling.

Weir launched her literary career in 1992 with The Winter Widow, the inaugural book in her Susan Wren series. This gripping tale introduces readers to Susan, a city woman who becomes an unlikely police chief in Hampstead, Kansas, after her husband Daniel Wren is killed by a sniper just ten days into their marriage.

Her storytelling skills extended beyond the Susan Wren series, as demonstrated in Unknown Footprints, which follows Maddie Martin, a Kansas transplant working as a sheriff's deputy in California's Mira Vista. The novel weaves together missing persons cases, controversial stem-cell research, family dysfunction, and murder in a complex narrative that showcases Weir's talent for multilayered mysteries.
