A Florida native, Cleeton's Cuban heritage runs deep—her family fled Cuba for America following the Cuban Revolution. This personal history sparked her enduring fascination with politics and history, which shaped her academic journey. She pursued her undergraduate studies at Richmond, The American International University in London, before obtaining a master's degree in Global Politics from the prestigious London School of Economics & Political Science. She later completed her legal education, earning a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
