Order of Catherine Cookson Books

Catherine Cookson (1906-1998) was a prolific English novelist who captivated readers with her historical fiction and the beloved Mary Ann Shaughnessy series. Born into poverty as the illegitimate child of Kate, who she believed to be her sister rather than her mother, Cookson drew from her difficult early experiences to create authentic, compelling stories. Her work resonated particularly with audiences in Northern England, establishing her as a celebrated regional author who gave voice to working-class life and struggles.

Cookson's literary career began in 1950 with the publication of Kate Hannigan, and she remained remarkably productive throughout her life, continuing to write until her death. Her dedication to her craft was recognized with numerous honors, culminating in her appointment as Dame of the British Empire in 1993—a testament to her extraordinary contribution to English literature. Even after her passing, her final work reached readers in 2002, demonstrating the lasting impact of her storytelling.

Several of Cookson's novels were published under various titles, including The Mallen Litter (also known as The Mallen Lot), Tilly Trotter Wed (shortened to Tilly Wed), and Tilly Trotter Widowed (republished as Tilly Alone). The Moth appeared as The Thorman Inheritance, while The House on the Fens was also titled The Fen Tiger, and Evil at Roger's Cross was known as The Iron Facade.

Writing under the pen name Catherine Marchant, she authored Heritage of Folly, The House of Men, The House on the Fens, Evil at Roger's Cross, The Long Corridor, Miss Martha Mary Crawford, and The Slow Awakening.

In her novel Rooney, Cookson tells the story of Rooney Smith, a 35-year-old bachelor working as a dustman who enjoys his uncomplicated existence in two furnished rooms. However, when he makes the decision to live with Ma Howlett, his once-straightforward life takes an unexpectedly complex turn.
