Order of Carlos Fuentes Books
Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012) stands as one of Mexico's most celebrated literary voices. The New York Times honored him in their obituary as "one of the most admired writers in the Spanish-speaking world." A traditionalist at heart, Fuentes embraced his identity as a pre-modern writer, crafting all his works with nothing more than pen, ink, and paper. Born to a Mexican diplomat, he followed a similar path in his own career, ultimately serving his country as ambassador to France.
Fuentes launched his literary career in 1958 with his debut novel Where the Air is Clear, and remained prolific right up until his death in 2012. Below you'll find Carlos Fuentes' complete bibliography arranged by original publication date:
Note: The Picador Book of Latin American Stories was co-edited with Julio Ortega.
Carlos Fuentes Book Summaries: The Death of Artemio Cruz presents the story of a powerful newspaper mogul and landowner who, bedridden and near death, experiences vivid, dreamlike memories of his life's defining moments. The narrative weaves through Cruz's heroic days fighting in the Mexican Revolution, his determined rise from humble beginnings to immense wealth, and finally his troubled final hours. Fuentes crafts a mesmerizing exploration of modern Mexico's very essence.
The Campaign offers readers a standalone adventure from Carlos Fuentes. Against the backdrop of Spanish America's fight for independence, we follow Baltasar Bustos as he journeys throughout South America and Mexico on a quest for redemption that intertwines personal salvation with public duty.
