C.J. Petit is an American western novelist whose publishing credits include Riding Shotgun, Jake, Cap Tyler, and The Photographer.

Petit's writing journey began following his cancer diagnosis in 1995. Treatment complications ultimately left him unable to continue working, leading to his placement on disability. During this period at home, he became an avid reader, particularly drawn to western novels. This passion for the genre eventually inspired him to try his hand at writing his own stories.

In Riding Shotgun, Lemhi County Sheriff Mitch Ward successfully apprehends Ace Carr, the leader of an infamous outlaw gang. Ward takes little satisfaction in the capture, knowing the danger it brings—Carr's gang remains at large and will undoubtedly attempt a rescue. Since Carr isn't wanted in Ward's jurisdiction, the sheriff must transport his prisoner to Lewiston on the Oregon-Idaho Territory border. Ward sets out by stagecoach with a deputy and the captive Carr, anticipating trouble but unprepared for the gang's desperate tactics.

Jake follows Private Jake Elliot as he returns from military service to his family's ranch near Fort Benton in Montana Territory. Elliot is devastated to learn the shocking reason behind his discharge: his father has murdered his mother. Determined to honor his mother's memory, Jake returns home with one purpose—to track down his father and ensure justice is served.
