Before establishing himself as a novelist, Granger honed his storytelling skills in journalism, working as a reporter for both the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun Times. Though born in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, Chicago became his adopted home and the city where he spent most of his years. His writing career began during his college days at DePaul University, where he served as editor of The Depaulia student newspaper. Following graduation and military service in the United States Army, he transitioned into professional journalism.
