Order of Bernard Malamud Books

Bernard Malamud (1914-1986) stands as one of America's most celebrated literary voices, crafting both fiction and non-fiction that earned him extraordinary critical acclaim. His remarkable career garnered numerous prestigious honors, including two National Book Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and the Gold Medal from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Alongside contemporaries Saul Bellow, Joseph Heller, and Philip Roth, Malamud was recognized as among the finest Jewish American writers of his generation.

Malamud entered the literary scene with his 1952 debut novel, The Natural, launching a distinguished career that would span decades.

In The Assistant, a standalone work by Malamud, readers encounter a powerful tale of redemption. The story follows a desperate Italian-American man haunted by his violent past as he enters the struggling world of a Brooklyn Jewish grocer. His life transforms when he falls for the grocer's discontented daughter, who inspires him toward a path of change.

The Fixer transports readers to Kiev in 1911, a time when anti-Semitic tensions ran dangerously high. Malamud tells the gripping story of Yakov Bok, a Jewish handyman who becomes the scapegoat for a young Russian boy's savage murder. Seeking opportunity in Kiev, Bok conceals his Jewish heritage and ironically finds employment with a member of the virulently anti-Semitic Black Hundreds Society. When the boy's blood-drained body is discovered in a cave, the Black Hundreds point to ritual murder, targeting the Jewish community. Though arrested and imprisoned, Bok maintains his innocence, refusing to confess to this heinous crime he never committed.
