Her path to becoming a published author was anything but conventional—she drew from diverse life experiences working as a high school teacher, model, waitress, technical editor, liquor store clerk, and karate instructor before dedicating herself fully to writing.

Her personal life once intersected with the science fiction community through her marriage to fellow author George Alec Effinger.
