Order of Annie Haynes Books
Annie Haynes was a British mystery writer whose career was cut short by her premature death. She launched her writing career in 1923 with The Bungalow Mystery, marking the beginning of what would become a prolific output in the crime fiction genre.
During the early 1900s, Haynes resided in London, where she became involved with literary communities and early feminist movements. Throughout her career, she managed to publish ten complete novels. Following her passing, readers were treated to one final work, Who Killed Charmian Karslake?, which was released posthumously. Additionally, an unfinished manuscript, The Crystal Beads Murder, was brought to completion by an anonymous collaborator and published in 1930. Haynes is perhaps most celebrated for The Inspector Stoddart Mystery series, which showcased her talent for crafting intricate detective stories.
The series launches with The Man with The Dark Beard, featuring the murder of Dr. Barstow. The investigation begins when his body is discovered alongside a cryptic message reading "It was the man with the dark beard." The case becomes complicated when Basil Wilton, who was romantically involved with Barstow's daughter despite the doctor's disapproval, emerges as the primary suspect after Barstow is found dead in his locked office. Inspector Stoddart must navigate a web of evidence including a missing lacquered box, a colleague who has mysteriously shaved off his beard, and Barstow's former secretary who has recently acquired unexplained wealth.
The series continues with The Crime at Tattenham Corner, which unfolds against the backdrop of Derby Day. When a murder threatens to overshadow the prestigious race, the situation becomes even more intriguing as the victim owned Peep o' Day, the race favorite, which subsequently refuses to compete, leading to disqualification. Inspector Stoddart investigates whether the killing might be connected to racing rivalry and sabotage.
