She's particularly known for her compelling Shaker series. Her childhood on a Kentucky farm sparked her writing dreams early—she knew she wanted to be an author before she even turned ten years old.

Gabhart has a talent for bringing different time periods to life, setting her novels against the backdrop of the 1800s, the Great Depression, the 1960s, and present day, typically in intimate small-town settings. Her storytelling career began in 1978 with her debut novel, A Forbidden Yearning.
