Andre Norton (1912-2005) stands as a pioneering figure in American science fiction and fantasy literature, crafting stories that captivated both adult and young adult readers throughout her remarkable career. Her groundbreaking achievements include becoming the first woman to receive the prestigious Gandalf Grand Master Award in 1977, followed by the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award from the SFWA in 1983.

Norton's literary journey began with historical fiction and adventure tales before she discovered her true calling in speculative fiction, the genre that would establish her legendary status. Her stories are distinguished by their frequent inclusion of cats and other creatures, often portrayed as extraordinarily intelligent beings with telepathic abilities. While she created numerous beloved series, Norton achieved her greatest recognition through the acclaimed Witch World series.

Her path to publication began during her school newspaper days when she penned her debut novel. Interestingly, this first work became her second published book, Ralestone Luck, which appeared in 1938. Her actual publishing debut was The Prince Commands in 1934. Norton continued balancing other work with her writing until 1958, when she transitioned to being a full-time author.

Throughout her prolific career, Norton published under various titles and collaborated extensively with other authors. Some of her works appeared under alternative names—Sword in Sheath was also released as Island of the Lost, while Daybreak 2250 AD appeared as Star Man's Son, and Star Rangers became known as The Last Planet. Quest Crosstime was retitled Crosstime Agent, Steel Magic was published as Gray Magic, and Secret of the Lost Race appeared as Wolfshead. The Many Worlds of Andre Norton was also known as The Book of Andre Norton. Several early works appeared under the pseudonym Andrew North, including Sargasso of Space, Plague Ship, and Voodoo Planet.

Norton's collaborative spirit resulted in numerous co-authored works with distinguished writers including Pauline M. Griffin, Sherwood Smith, Lyn McConchie, Dorothy Madlee, Mercedes Lackey, Rosemary Edghill, A.C. Crispin, Jean Rabe, Mary H.
