Her journey into speculative fiction began early, sparked by Isaac Asimov's science fiction and later expanded into fantasy through Ursula Le Guin's celebrated Earthsea Quartet. While pursuing an engineering degree in college, de Bodard turned to writing as a creative outlet from her demanding studies. What started as a diversion quickly blossomed into a genuine passion. To hone her craft, she participated in Orson Scott Card's Literary Bootcamp, which proved instrumental in developing her skills. Her dedication paid off when she claimed victory in the prestigious Writers of the Future contest, launching her successful writing career.
