Alan Carter is an Australian author celebrated for creating the Cato Kwong crime series, which chronicles the investigations of Detective Senior Sergeant Cato Kwong in the Western Australian port city of Fremantle.

Born in the United Kingdom in 1959, Carter eventually relocated to Australia, where he established his permanent residence. After studying communication studies at Sunderland Polytechnic, he embarked on a career producing television documentaries before transitioning to fiction writing.

Carter's debut novel, Prime Cut, marked a spectacular entry into the literary world, earning recognition as a finalist for the prestigious Dagger Award for Best Debut and securing runner-up status in the Penguin Crime Writing Competition. The novel also claimed the coveted Ned Kelly Award for Best Fiction, establishing Carter as a formidable voice in crime fiction.
